    Overview
A growing awareness of compliance in handling inspection data

Steel makers and manufacturers that turn steel into parts have to analyze its strength, hardness, fatigue characteristics, and other qualities, to  select optimum materials for the production process and target product, and to control product quality.

During inspection, the metal is observed under a microscope and graded on its shape and structure.

This  visual inspection of metal structures relies on the inspector's acuity and expertise, and has proved too difficult to automate. But increased awareness of the need for compliance to avoid issues such as falsified inspection data, has put the spotlight on realizing automated inspections, free of human intervention.

    Value
    Replicating a skilled eye

We have developed a highly accurate, AI-based, image analysis system to automate visual inspections. We are currently evaluating its usefulness with steel manufacturers.

AI trained with diverse data, derived from expert knowledge with Toshiba’s analytics AI, can determine and grade crystal grain size and quality. Recognition accuracy compares with that of a visual inspection by a skilled inspector.

This service replicates the skilled eyes of trained inspectors, allowing anyone to use it in evaluations, with cloud based architecture to share models, data, and expertise.

    Thoughts behind the name SPINEX

    SPINE + X

The spine is our body’s central support structure, our core, home to the spinal cord that radiates nerves throughout or bodies. In the same way as the nervous system allows us to experience the world, edge computing delivers fast decisions in data processing by distributing sensing and control to every point where it is needed.

Our spine makes us strong and agile. We can do the same for your business, and contribute to society, by providing an essential industrial IoT framework that supports your people and operations with fast, appropriate on-site processing.

The X of SPINEX represents eXperience and  eXpansion, and the crossover with other value creators and services. This is how we will create the future with TOSHIBA SPINEX Services.

Two pillars of the Toshiba IoT Reference Architecture compliance standard

APIThe service is an open interface, not closed on itself, an architecture that enables third parties to safely create value.
SecurityThe service implements system security that meets global standards. We can provide customers with all the information they need to assess those standards, and determine whether or not the service meets their business’ security requirements.
